More vote machine talk slated

Volusia-Flagler News-Journal   June 22, 2005

With little separating Volusia County from a high-profile voting rights lawsuit, the County Council will meet again to discuss voting machines for people with disabilities.

The council recently denied Supervisor of Elections Ann McFall's request for 210 touch-screen machines to meet a state deadline for disabled-accessible voting because the machines do not use paper ballots.

But with a national advocacy group for people with disabilities ready for a fight, County Chairman Frank Bruno has set another public discussion at 9 a.m. June 29 in council chambers in DeLand.

Bruno isn't optimistic.

"I think it's a rehash, to be perfectly honest with you," he said.

McFall wanted the machines for disabled voters to be used in conjunction with the county's ballot system. She also planned to use the machines for all voters during early voting periods. Opponents want written ballots for all machines to protect against fraud.

Last week, a representative of the American Association of People with Disabilities told the county the group will sue if the situation isn't resolved. Bruno said he expects the representative to attend.

One local organization for people with disabilities, Handicapped Adults of Volusia County, has sided with touch-screen opponents; another, the Halifax Council of the Blind, has voted to join a lawsuit, said the council's president, Mary Ellen Ottman.
