Tracking the primary elections
Tuesday, March 07, 2006   Posted: 07:58 PM

NEWSCHANNEL 5 has crews all across the Valley tracking the latest on the 2006 primary elections

WESLACO ? NEWSCHANNEL 5 is tracking the primary elections across the Valley.

Besides the usual sights of candidate supporters holding signs and voters streaming in and out, the Palmview Community Center has something you won?t find everywhere. The watchdog group, Futuro McAllen, has sent poll watchers to several spots in McAllen to make sure no one is interfering with the legal voting process.

Nedra Kinerk says, ?There should be no one coming in demanding to assist anybody. If a voter needs assistance, they should tell an election judge they need help.? So far there are no problems at this polling location.

In Starr County, the Elections Administrator tells NEWSCHANNEL 5 their new touch-screen computerized machines are a big hit. Rudy Montalvo estimates about 30% of the voters chose to use them. Since there are no major races across the county, Montalvo says voter turnout has been moderate.

Willacy County officials tell us they are receiving great feedback from voters on the new computerized systems. They say the system removes voter errors and simplifies counting. About 25% - 30% of voters are using the new system. They estimate more than 10% of registered voters in the county have turned out so far.

Kenedy County has not had any bad feedback on their new computers, either. The race for State Representative, District 43 brought out about a third of the voters during the early voting period, so they are expecting a great turnout in Kenedy County.

In the lower Valley, election workers say voting is slow throughout most of the county. There are more than 160,000 registered voters, but election administrators estimate only about a fourth of those voters will cast ballots on Tuesday.
