Computer glitch affecting early voting in Belle Meade

Tennessean.Com   28 July 2007

A problem with the main computer system is delaying early voting at the Belle Meade City Hall this morning, according to on-site reports.

The problem began around noon and technicians with the Davidson County Election Commission are working to find a solution, Elections Administrator Ray Barrett said.

"All the computers are down but we're still voting," Barrett said. "There's nothing wrong with the voting machines themselves, it's just taking a few extra minutes to vote."

During the early voting period, voters come in to the early voting locations and election officials will look up their voting precinct and voter number, Barrett said.

Officials are using laptop computers to look up the voter information and calling the commission office if necessary in order to facilitate the early voting process, Barrett said. The laptops are there as a backup in case a situation such as this morning's computer outage happens.

Commission officials expect the main computer system to be fixed sometime this afternoon.
