"Support open source in California"
VotersUnite! Alert #6. June 29, 2004. California Voters! For an election to truly be transparent, every part of the election process must be observable by the public. The software used by Diebold, ES&S, Sequoia, Hart, and other vendors is currently a trade secret. We aren't allowed to examine what it's doing when it counts the votes. "Open source" means that the software can be examined by the public. Any programmer could examine the software to check how it works, to look for errors or malicious code. Please contact your state legislators to support "Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 242--Relative to ballot tally software." Resolution 242 would "request the Secretary of State to investigate and evaluate the use of open-source software in all voting machines in California". It gets to the heart of why open source voting systems are appropriate: "Since no component or aspect of open-source code is shielded from public viewing, and all members of the public have complete access to the source code for evaluation purposes, there is transparency and public oversight".
