"Emergency Measures to Protect the 2004 Vote Count"
VotersUnite! Alert #11. August 17, 2004.

United Voters, now is the time to truly unite!

NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THIS

As you know, we have less than three months before the General Election. Another questionable federal election is certain to precipitate a national crisis, regardless of who wins.

In addition, both parties are amassing networks of lawyers throughout the country, preparing to challenge any election anomalies. Without national confidence in the outcome, states and counties could spend billions of dollars defending themselves against legal challenges.

We activists have been pursuing many different avenues, and this has made us a force to be reckoned with. These pursuits must continue. However, we must ALL unite in one thing - a call for Emergency Measures To Protect The 2004 Vote Count. This is a plan originated by a task force of the National Ballot Integrity Project (http://www.ballotintegrity.org), in cooperation with VotersUnite! and other voting integrity organizations.

All votes for federal offices must be cast on paper and counted by hand.

United in this call, we have a chance for success. We understand that these emergency measures are not a permanent solution to our election system crisis. In fact, they are a minimal solution but the only practical solution at this point. They are essential for November and insisting on more may prevent us from achieving even this.

The candidate list is finalized in some states and will soon be finalized in all of them. Printed absentee ballots must be ready to mail out in time for voters to return them by the required date. So, counties will be ordering ballots soon, certainly in September and possibly any day.

This proposal is the only solution to our pending national crisis, and it must be implemented immediately.
