To the Editors:

The last thing America needs is a repeat of the 2000 election debacle. Yet, we may be in for something much, much worse.

With the nation divided, forecasters say the current patchwork of questionable and unverifiable voting systems across the country will yield a result on November 2 that half the country may not accept.

And with partisan rancor at an all-time high, and trust in government an all-time low, the chaos could last long past the inauguration of the declared winner, distracting and destabilizing the country, making us vulnerable domestically and abroad.

The election reforms now proposed in Congress won’t take effect until 2006. But we can’t afford to wait. That’s why we -- a bipartisan, fast-growing coalition – are proposing legislation mandating paper ballots and hand-counting for every Federal office in the November 2, 2004 election.

It’s a radical undertaking, to be sure. But experienced election judges currently working in the field confirm that our proposal is logistically realistic. And the best part is, the “technology” is already in place. All we need is the will to demand it of our legislators – now.

Please join us in re-uniting this nation at www.votersunite.org.

Sincerely,
