Voter turnout still not known
By KORI KAMRADT ? County Reporter for the Herald Argus. 04 November 2004.

LAPORTE ? The computer glitch that has delayed LaPorte County?s voter turnout figures from Tuesday?s election still hasn?t been fixed.

While vote totals for candidates were correctly printed following frantic work to fix computer problems Tuesday night, the voter turnout figures still aren?t right.

The problem lies in the column that is supposed to reflect the number of registered voters per precinct. The column erroneously showed that every precinct had a total of 300 registered voters.

The glitch forced the clerk?s office to delay printing election results for some 90 minutes Tuesday night, and it?s still working to correct the problem.

LaPorte County Clerk Lynne Spevak told the Herald-Argus this morning that her office is waiting to receive a computer program from Chicago-based Election Systems and Software that should correct the problem.

Spevak said if that doesn?t work, the clerk?s office will have to manually count every registered voter in all 74 precincts.

?If it has to be done, we will do it,? Spevak said.

It?s something she hopes won?t have to happen.

A program that was expected to fix the problem was e-mailed to the clerk?s office Tuesday evening, but communication with the computers in the clerk?s office was unsuccessful.
