Polling places in at least five Summit County communities Green, Norton, Springfield, Tallmadge and Twinsburg, ran out of ballots Tuesday evening as voter turnout was much higher than expected. Would-be voters said they left sites without voting, not knowing when additional ballots would be delivered.

Republican Election Commissioner Pamela N. Mandryck said there was a problem at a Vernon polling location when none of the three voting machines would operate. While the problem was being fixed, voters used paper emergency ballots or a ballot marking device. All polling sites have one such machine to accommodate special needs of the handicapped.

In fact, district three has had some glitches with ballots all morning. The district chair says the new machine is so sensitive it picks up defects in the paper, rejecting the ballot. "And so because it picks up the defects, it doesn't pick up what people are voting for, and we have to void it and give them another paper," said Sweeney. And it happened 16 times.

I went to 5108 St. John Ave., but the election officials couldn't find me anywhere in their books. They sent me to a trouble-shooter in another area of the big room. She searched her computer records. I didn't exist - anywhere! I have been a registered voter first in Clay County and then in Jackson County since 1977 when I moved to Kansas City. I felt like screaming: "The devil with your lap top. Damn it, I do exist!"

A voting machine test this week didn't go off without a hitch....In one test a ballot with both blue and black ink was unable to be scanned. Officials pulled that scanner from service and substituted another. It didn't work either.
