By Jenni Vincent, Journal Staff Writer Approximately 3,700 voters have cast early votes in Berkeley County, with less than a half dozen individuals reporting problems with the county's voting machines, Berkeley officials said Thursday. But those words did little to comfort Martinsburg resident Lyle Peterson, who said he had problems last week trying to cast his vote for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. "I kept trying to vote for Obama, pushed him for my selection but it would come up for John McCain. It took three times before it came up right," Peterson said Thursday.

Nyden, Staff writer Roger Belozier, a veteran and retired postal worker from Berkeley County, experienced problems with electronic voting machines when he went to vote early in the Martinsburg courthouse. "I reviewed my vote to make sure it was a straight Democratic ticket. But it switched my vote to Republican candidates five different times. I was able to cancel out the Republican votes.

Technical problems at several Fulton County polling places caused voting lines to grow long and tempers to grow short Wednesday evening. Computers at the North Fulton Government Center and other county polling places lost their connection to the state's database, officials told CBS 46’s Joanna Massee. That glitch created a big headache for election workers and long waits for voters.

Voters in the District of Columbia who requested an absentee ballot may have received the wrong ballot. The D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics has only received one complaint from a voter who was sent the wrong ballot, but the problem could extend beyond one incident, D.C. BOEE spokesman Dan Murphy says.

All absentee ballots cast using machines at the Hilton Head Island and Beaufort elections offices have been counted, Beaufort County elections officials said Wednesday. County Elections and Voter Registration director Agnes Garvin said the county machines were working properly and counting residents' votes as they should.

Erroneous absentee ballots have been sent to 69 North Port voters, a gaffe that came to light 13 days before Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent stands for re-election. Dent’s opponents cast the mistake as the latest example of the county’s election problems, the most notable one being the controversial congressional election in 2006 that made Sarasota County a national symbol for problems with touch-screen voting systems.

Old town Bluffton residents Nancy and Bill Roe were among the voters who said they noticed a problem. Nancy Roe said she ed all her choices on the screen at the booth Friday. She had attempted to cast a ballot for the general election, Bluffton mayor and council, and the various statereferendum questions. She said she clicked on all her choices including two candidates for Bluffton Town Council. But when she reviewed her ions before actually casting the ballot, she noticed that her two picks for the Bluffton Town Council did not register. Her husband had the same problem.
