A software glitch, Lyman said, caused precinct totals in an early voting location to be counted more than once. The problem with a memory card used to store results was difficult to identify, Lyman said, because not every precinct total doubled.

Two pieces of malicious software detected Thursday have been removed from Pinellas County's voting tabulation system. The two bugs, known as Flush.G and W32.SillyDC, work in tandem and go from computer to computer redirecting Internet browsers to sites the user hasn't ed, officials said. The worm is carried through removable media like USB drives, is easily detected and, officials say, rather harmless.

A 2006 election night computer bug that switched 72 votes for U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., from Barnegat to Lakewood was caused by reporting software in Ocean County's election system, though officials for the county Board of Elections never did learn exactly why the malfunction happened, a former executive supervisor for the board testified Wednesday in court.

The election commission also discovered an error in the East Cadron B precinct machine that caused votes cast in the Cadron Township Constable race for John Edwards and Paul Niehaus to be "ped into" the District 45 race, Haggard said. He said he did not know whether this mistake was caused by an error within the machine or an error by the person who programmed the machine.

In addition, election results were not posted on the city clerk's Web site, www.bullittcountyclerk.com, until yesterday morning because workers forgot, Mooney said. In a separate issue, Robert and Tina Graham of Hillview complained that they didn't get to vote in their local election, and Mooney said several other people had the same complaint. Mooney said poll workers failed to give local-election ballots to voters in a few instances. But he said, as a security measure, once people vote, they can't go back and vote again, and it was after they cast their ballots that they noticed they hadn't voted in the local election.
