Charles Tomlinson South Carolina Now 03 December 2006 More than 100 voters cast blank ballots in last month’s Florence School District 1 bond referendum, and Florence County Elections Director Mike Young wants to find out what caused that phenomenon. “I’d like to know why 108 people would go into a polling place and go through all the trouble of signing in, showing their identification, and going into the voting booth and casting a blank ballot,” Young said.

A recount after next year's presidential election could mean disaster for Cuyahoga County based on problems discovered Tuesday with paper records produced by electronic voting machines. More than 20 percent of the printouts from touch-screen voting machines were unreadable and had to be reprinted. Board of Elections workers found the damaged ballots when they conducted a recount Tuesday of two races, which involved only 17 of the county's 1,436 precincts.

The state's top elections official has cleared away a potential trouble spot, just in time for a week of recounts at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner gave the board permission to reprint paper records of votes if the printouts made on Election Day are unreadable during a recount - a problem the board has encountered twice this year.
