And once again, problems with that software on the night of the big show delayed election results Tuesday and left candidates in close elections in Sarasota and Manatee counties going to bed without knowing how they fared.

County Clerk Janice Cosco said the computer software usually has a problem tabulating the early votes, but the problem is generally resolved very quickly. Once the tabulation gets going, everything’s finished in short order. Tuesday night, that didn’t happen.

The problem wasn’t solved until after midnight Wednesday, delaying candidate celebrations until unofficial results were reported.

Pal-Item.com. November 6, 2008. BY BILL ENGLE The national media placed Wayne County last in Indiana in counties reporting election results. Results were released to the public at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, long after McCain, the Republican Party's presidential candidate, had conceded the race for the White House to Democrat Barack Obama. County officials said part of the problem was a computer glitch that stopped the vote count. Part was the large number of absentee ballots cast.

November 6, 2008. by Anna Mathews According to Election Coordinator Cathy Ellis, an inked black block in the upper left hand corner of some paper ballots did not contain enough ink to satisfy the counting machine. When she called Election Systems and Software (ES&S), the company that provides the electronic voting machines, software, and printed paper ballots, she said they immediately suggested she try filling in the box with a black marker.

The Denver Channel (ABC 7 News). November 6, 2008 BOULDER, Colo. Nearly two full days after the presidential election was called, election workers in Boulder County were still counting ballots Wednesday afternoon. As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, 113,000 of the 166,000 ballots cast had been counted.
Counting machines were not reading some ballots correctly because of dust on the ballots, possibly coming from the creases after the mail-in ballots were folded.

WADE TAMPA - With computer glitches delaying Hillsborough County's voting results by hours, election supervisor Buddy Johnson was hanging on to his job Tuesday night by a slim margin. Results were delayed almost from the very beginning. Students at the University of South Florida were still in line to vote at 10:30 p.m., and elections officials said computer problems were causing delays.

"These were early votes that we entered into the machine. We didn't tell the software to count them," Phillips said.
